Life is too short to waste being too busy with nothingness, so I prefer to live my life serving others and to make an impact with my own two hands. Service is a journey within your inner self as you will grow to be a human. Gandhi once said “The best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Since my first community service in October 2005, real feelings kicked in for the first time and I never felt like this before as I grew to understand who I am as a human and what impact I can make with the simple good act. Within service, I grew to understand what life is and how to be happy. Happiness became a smile I give to cheer others, a tear I share to comfort others and a warm hand I give to help others stand. I yearn to serve my community as it gives me peace at heart and a feeling of belonging. I read this once “You make a living by what you get but you make a life by what you give” and since my first community service I felt obligated to give back to my community and to help others overcome their struggles and to create opportunities, dreams, and a better world to live in.
I could have chosen to stay at home work on projects, midterms, sleep-in, and to chill with friends and family but I felt selfish to enjoy the blessings I have when others don’t even dream about it. I wished to give people hope that they can and to help them to achieve their dreams so I chose to come to ASB to help build a house, a person, and a community. The least I can give is my time. Once my friend asked “ do you want to be rich?” and I said that I pray that I will never be rich so I can always serve my community with my own two hands and give them my time, my life, my everything. Through every community service I volunteered at, made me realize the strength of love. Love has no meaning because it is just a word and to witness love it has to be put into action and the only action I felt love within is service. I get so excited for days before an event and I won’t stop talking about it for days afterwards. Service became a part of me as I found myself within others.
My grandmother once said that to expect mercy from God we need to bestow our mercy on others who are less fortunate without them asking and to expect nothing in return. God gave us so many blessings and we need to share His mercy with all. She told me when she knew how active I am in service “helping others will give you serenity and warmth in your heart, it will make you a human that will never hurt an ant. It will make you live for real.” She was so proud of me when I told her about ASB and she was chocked that I will be volunteering for a week. Now, she will watch me making her words alive from heaven.
During this week, I will grow within my community and I will achieve things I never imagined. I will witness the beauty of Oneness as all of us come together to make a difference and to help others with out expecting anything in return. ASB will impact my life and personality forever as every one of you will inspire me in ways I never imagined. The experience I will attain from this week will nourish me to grow within humanity and it will become a moment that will turn my whole life into actions of service. This is the Reason I chose ASB and I will give my everything during this week.
I can not wait to meet all of you and to be part of this experience. See you all in a week.
With gratitude,
Amal Hassan
