Alternative Spring Break 2008

Over the last two years, United Way has teamed with local communities across the Gulf Coast to mobilize the passion of young adults to help rebuild after the devastation of Hurricanes Ivan, Katrina and Rita. This year, we continue to build on the groundswell of commitment of Gen Y. United Way and young adults from across the country will converge on communities along the Gulf Coast and in Detroit as well. Volunteers will dedicate a week of their lives to helping rebuild communities.

Why Detroit?

Why not?

There has been so much publicity for the storms in the gulf. I feel that as a location that had been added to the bill because of its great need, Detroit may be less attractive to volunteers, especially since it doesn't fit into the original theme of 'storm rebuilding' Alternative Spring Break. I wanted to volunteer where the need is greatest, and I felt that that would be Detroit.

Detroit has fallen on hard times for many years now. I hope our team can give it a boost.
